mercury is the closest planet to the sun the smallest and also the fastest planet in the entire solar system. because of this, it was named after the messanger of the gods and its alternative name is hermes. it is a heavily cratered world similar to our moon and has the largest core relative to the size of the planet. it also has the most eccentric orbit of all the planets and the most inclined to the plane of the ecliptic (the plane upon which the earth orbits). it also experiences tidal perturbations from the other planets and the sun that cause its rotation period and orbit to resonate causing one day on the planet to last two years on the planet. because its axial tlt is almost zero, ercury has no seasons, and thus water ice can exist in the always shadowed regions of craters at the polar regions. mercury has a very weak magnetosphere and an extremely thin atmosphere (where most scientists say that it is more of an exosphere) that is constantly replenished by the solar wind. over the coarse of billions of years as the solar system ages, continuous interactions of mercury with the other planets will cause its orbit to become ever more eccentric until scientists say that it will probably impact venus. but thats billions of years from now and the probability of it impacting venus is only 1%.

hi guys!:D here i've recreated mercury. i like the way it came out, but i think mercury is a little tto brown, so i'll have to make some slight adjustments to the image. i especially like the light rays too!:) they make the planet feel close to the sun!:) used a real mercury map off of google.

its one of four images of the inner planets that are part of my 4000 pageview special!:squee: thank all of you so very much for your support and in making this happen!;)

you can see the other three here:

Venus: Earth Mars:

as always, comments and critiques are always welcome and appreciated!:D so please enjoy the artwork and let me know what you think!:D

!!!THANK YOU FOR ALL FAVES IN ADVANCE!!!

I do believe that this is a good illustration of Mercury. The planet is the 1st planet from the Sun. It looks awfully realistic. I don't usually envision Mercury as being a dry, hot, and dead world, but rather as being an extremely volcanic planet with a thick red atmosphere and a difficult history, including countless years of orbiting the Sun and continuous collisions with asteroids and other smaller bodies. I do have to agree, however, that there can be some slight adjustments, but I do not know if you already did those or not. I really like this vision.
