earth is the third planet from the sun and the largest of the four inner rocky planets, making it the fifth largest planet in the solar system after the four gas giants. it is also known as terra. it is the only planet or celestial body currently known to have liquid water and life on its surface. earth has liquid water on its surface because it exists in the habitable zone. two other planets also lie in the habitable zone: venus (inner boundary of zone) and mars (outer area of zone), but their surface conditions are too unfavourable for liquid water to exist. earth is home to we humans and millions of other organisms that thrive in its biosphere. earths atmosphere is very suitable for life as it has a high proportion of oxygen as compared to other planets like venus and mars who's atmospheres are nearly completely carbon dioxide. earth is very similar to venus but only in physical characteristics and composition as their surfaces are completely different from one another.

earth has one large natural satelite named the moon, also called luna. the moon is the largest moon in the solar system compared to its planet, however pluto's moon charon is larger in proportion to its primary, pluto. but pluto is no longer classed as a planet, so the earth and moon hold the title of biggest moon compared to planet. the moon is responsible for the ocean tides and also helps stabalise earth's axial tilt and protect it from any perturbations by the gravity of other planets like jupiter. the moon is tidally lock to earth just like how most other moons in the solar system are tidally locked to their planet. and so, one day on the moon lasts the same amount of time as one lunar orbit around the earth.

alot of people say that the moon orbits the earth, but i say they're wrong! the moon is so large compared to earth that they both actually orbit each other around a common center of mass known as the barycenter. this barycenter is located about 1,700km below the earth's surface, but not in its core! earth and the moon then revolve around the barycenter once every lunar cycle (every time the moon orbits earth, about every 27.5 days).

the moon formed soon after the earth, from a giant impact of the early earth with a mars sized protoplanet named theia. material from the earth was thrown into orbit around earth and eventually coallessed and cooled to form our moon. when the moon formed, it was four times closer than it is today and one day on earth lasted only six hours! earth was a volcanic and windy world just starting to cool and develope oceans. the close proximity of the moon protected the developing earth from many asteroid impacts and left the satelite scared with millions of impact craters and dark lava basins. the moon also generated massive tides as tall as half the height of mount everest which swept across the land and created a 'primordial soup' of proteins that eventually lead to the creation of DNA and life on the planet. as the earth and moon aged, the moon gradually krept further from the earth and the tides generated by the moon also slowed down the earth's rotation, that eventually reduced the raging and stormy atmosphere of earth to a more calm and favourable one for life. life then grasped the planet and it thrived.

the moon is currently moving away from the earth at a rate of about 38mm a year. and as a result of tidal interactions with the moon, a day on earth lengthens by about 2 microseconds every year. eventually over a coarse of billions of years from now, either the moon would escape into space before the earth stops rotating or the earth would stop rotating before the moon escapes into space or the earth's rotation and the moon's orbit would stabalise. but this would happen long after the solar system has ended, so it would most likely not happen.

earth will continue to change and support life throughout its existance until the death of the sun. but by then, we humans would have developed space travel technology and had already colonised another planet or planets in the vast reaches of space. even then, if the earth we're to be destroyed in the sun's final death throws, it would always be remembered as the planet, where we came to be, and evolved, and learned the fascinating and charming mysteries about the cosmos, where we would live, explore and colonise.

hi guys!:D here i've recreated earth and the moon in the background to correct perspective. its one of four images of the inner planets that are part of my 4000 pageview special!:squee: heh, 4 images for 4000 pageviews!:D thank all of you so very much for your support and in making this happen!;)

you can see the other three here:

Mercury: Venus: Mars:

i love the way this came out!:faint: and i absolutely love the depth in the image!:D earth texture, its clouds, its lights and the milkyway are all good stocks that can be obtained from this site: [link] .:)
i would really love to live on that planet, oh yeah, we're already living on it!;p
seriously, this piece came out awesome!:D earth was a little pain to get right though, especially the atmosphere, but it came out pretty good!;) its oceans could had been a little lighter though, but still, its pretty good!:)
its summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere in the image.

as always, comments and critiques are always welcome and appreciated!:D so please enjoy the artwork and let me know what you think!:D

!!!THANK YOU FOR ALL FAVES IN ADVANCE!!!
